Burma Solidarity Actions2 Oct 2007Around 30 activists blockaded a Total petrol station to protest against the company’s heavy involvement with the military junta in Burma which is responsible for the deaths of several protesters in just the last few days.Total is in a joint venture with the Burmese dictatorship in the Yadana gas project, which earns the regime hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Aung Sun Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of the Burmese government under house arrest, says: ?Total has become the main supporter of the military regime?.A mix of students and locals stood, sat or drummed across both entrances to the forecourt for an hour and a half. Holding a banner reading “Totalitarian Oil-Fuelling Oppression in Burma” they leafleted and spoke to passers-by and motorists. Staff at the petrol station threatened protesters with sticks, car and lorry drivers attempted to run over protesters, but despite this things remained peaceful.Later in the day, students at the University of Bradford passed an emergency motion to mandate the Student Union to support the Burmese monks and investigate alternative suppliers since they currently use Total for fuelling their minibuses.See also the original newswire posts, photos and video.
Burma Solidarity Actions1 Oct 2007The military in Burma (Myanmar) has been unleashing its troops on unarmed demonstrators in a bid to stamp out mounting protests against the junta?s stifling rule, and price rises that have made life for broad layers of working people unbearable. The country’s military junta continues to escalate its attacks against the area’s ethnic minorities. The All Burma Monks Alliance, supported by the National League for Democracy and the Burmese people in general, have vowed to continue protests. There are ongoing daily protests outside the Burmese and Chinese embassies in London, where 200 or so protesters rallied on September 27th. Meanwhile a Total petrol station, the largest supporter of the Burmese military regime, was blockaded in Bradford for over an hour. Students there also mandated their Students Union to investigate alternative suppliers after learning the union has an account with Total. The oil company’s HQ has also been targeted with a die-in on October 2nd.There have also been calls to petition the UK government to boycott the Chinese Olympics due to China’s support of the military regime in Burma, a call to wear red shirts in solidarity. On September 30th, an emergency national demonstration took place with around a thousand people gathering in Trafalgar Square before marching down Whitehall and on to the Buddhist pagoda in Battersea Park. In Sheffield the Karen community protested on Monday 1st October.Ongoing protests in solidarity are expected to continue, both in the UK and around the world. See The Irrawaddy and the Democratic Voice of Burma for ongoing independent coverage of what’s happening in Burma, however Burma’s generals appeared to have cut public internet access today to prevent more videos, photographs and information about their violent crackdown getting out. While the repression of protests in Burma are condemned by the UK government a protest against the Iraq war that has killed 1.2 million called for the 8th October is banned.
Where Do We Go From Here?1 Oct 2007Notts Indymedia has been going for over 2 years now and has grown into one of the most successful Indymedia collectives in the UK. We have an ever expanding dedicated group of contributors and many readers. The site has become an important resource which informs and inspires ourselves, our friends and others who care about injustice and wanting to create a better place for all. The site is now even listed by the BBC as an alternative local news source… The Demo Project helped us financially with a benefit night (see photos [1] and [2]) which enabled us to pay for priniting costs for leaflets as well as for a couple of us to attend an alternative media conference in Brighton last May (read announcement and listen to audio). We were also able to get ourselves a digital audio device, and have started building up a substantial audio archive. There are various ideas about where the project should/can go from here. Website redesign, streaming online radioshow, producing (bi)montly printout, it is all possible. So where do we go from here? Are you able to commit some time for media creation? Help out with publicity? Able to donate some money? We are getting together for a meeting on Monday 8th October at 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre, Forest Fields, Nottingham. Everyone is welcome and we’d love to see you there.Links: Notts Indymedia Documentation | How to get to the Sumac Centre
Keep Tesco off Mill Road, Cambridge24 Sep 2007Tesco hope to move into Mill Road, Cambridge. The over whelming majority of residents and local traders absolutely do not want this to happen. The Gatwick No Border Camp16 Sep 20072007 is witnessing a resurgence of No Border Camps around the world as three Camps have been announced. The first one took place in Ukraine in mid August [Pics] and another one is announced at the US/Mexico border for November. But close to home, this week the UK sees the first No Border camp near Gatwick airport. Despite weeks of constant harassment of local farmers by the police, the Camp got under way as planned with several hundred people attending workshops and discussions, and taking part in actions and demonstrations throughout the week. The No Border Camp seeks “to try and stop the building of the new detention centre, and to gather ideas for how to build up the fight against the system of migration controls”. The Camp progaramme consists of four days of workshops, protests and discussions. Various actions were announced for the week, including a Transnational Demonstration on Saturday 22nd from Crawley to the site of Brook House attended by around 500 people. Brook House is planned to be Britain’s largest detention centre for migrant people, and it is being build next door to Tinsley House. Another solidarity march took place in Newcastle. Several actions also happened during the camp on Thursday and Friday. DSEi: A Week Of Actions Against The Arms Trade13 Sep 2007The 4th Defence Systems & Equipment International (DSEi) to be held at the ExCeL Centre in London’s Docklands was the focus of a concerted campaign in response to the callout for a Week of Action”.Some actions took place in advance of the opening, with Army recruitment adverts subvertised in Oxford, and a lock-on and weapons inspection at MSI in Norwich by Norfolk Campaign Against the Arms Trade. Actions on the previous day included a picket of a defence conference in Central London, and an action at AWE Aldermaston. On the opening day, Tuesday 11th September, the security cordon around DSEi, was breached shortly after 7.30am , when a group of about 20 activists ran into the car park. Later a solidarity blockade of BAE took place in Manchester. About 80 people joined a CAAT march and rally, and about 50 cyclists arrived at Custom House DLR station from a critical mass style ride that left Bank tube station mid-morning. Two people were arrested after ‘rivers of blood’ were poured onto the ramparts of the Arms Fair venue.Space Hijackers managed to get a tank and sound system to the main entrance of ExCeL, after diverting the police with a decoy tank. They auctioned off the tank and invited the 200 strong crowd to a party against the arms fair to let the fair’s delegates know what they think about their murderous business.Timeline of events: IMC-UK TickerAudio Reports: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7Reports: A day at DSEI | London Catholic Workers Expose Rivers of Blood at DSEiPhotos: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | VideoOn Thursday evening, the arms dealers attended the ‘Dinner of Death’ held at the Dorchester Hotel. Nuclear No Answer To Climate Change11 Sep 2007Protestors oppose the Government sham consultation on nuclear power. Gagged protestors handed out briefings to delegates attending one of the Government?s nuclear power consultation events on Wednesday September 12th, at the Hilton Hotel in Nottingham. Local representatives from Friends of the Earth demonstrated outside the East Midlands consultation event to highlight the fact that the Government?s consultation on nuclear power is a sham. Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WWF-UK, CND and the Green Alliance have withdrawn from the Government’s public consultation on nuclear power because it is seriously flawed.

DSEi arms fair will ‘end in violence’?8 Sep 2007This week the world’s largest arms fair returns to the ExCel Centre in East London during 11th-14th September. Defence Systems & Equipment International (DSEi) takes place every two years and in the past exhibitors have included companies selling cluster bombs and torture equipment. The future of DSEi is uncertain with the impending closure of the Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) , a government department whose sole purpose is to supports arms sales, and the announcement by Reed-Elsevier that they intend to sell their arms fair business after sustained campaigning by many groups including magazines Reed publishes, most prominently The Lancet, which maintained that supporting arms fairs was not compatible with medical ethics. Some affinity group actions have already taken place with Army recruitment adverts repurposed in Oxford, and a lock-on and weapons inspection at MSI in Norwich by Norfolk Campaign Against the Arms Trade. On the eve of DSEi Jane’s publishers are hosting a Defence Conference at a Mayfair hotel, which will be picketed by anti-arms protesters. For the first day of DSEi itself the Disarm DSEi campaign has called protesters to invade ExCel, and the Spacehijackers have announced that they will be auctioning a tank to protesters to level the odds. There will also be a Critical Mass ride to the arms fair. For further information, see Disarm DSEi and Indymedia’s DSEi topic pagePast coverage: 2001 | 2003 | 2005 Links: Nottingham Disarm DSEi | Space Hijackers | CAAT | London CAAT

Temporary Victory for DR Congo Refugees25 Aug 2007A High Court judge has ordered the halt of all deportations to the Democratic Republic of Congo pending a ‘country guidance’ hearing for the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal in September. The news was a reason for much rejoicing among DRC communities across the country, both inside and outside detention. Campaigners said the Home Office has, once again, missed a chance to get rid of as many Congolese asylum seekers as possible before the guidance appeal is determined in their favour. However, sources said the Home Office are still going ahead with the charter flight, filling it with DRC nationals who have not claimed asylum.A number of Congolese detainees had received ‘removal directions’ for the 30th August. Last February, 21 children and 17 adults were forcibly deported to DR Congo on a charter flight operated by XL.Eight coordinated protests have been called by Congolese communities and the Congo Support Project for August 28th in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Middlesborough, Newcastle and Nottingham. Meanwhile, charter airline XL has threatened the National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns (NCADC) with legal action after the latter published a message saying XL might be operating the 30th August deportation flight.Related: Dozens deported to DR Congo | UK-wide Day of Action Against Deportations to DR Congo

Save Pegah Emambakhsh from British Prison and Iranian Lashes23 Aug 2007An international campaign to prevent the UK government deporting Pegah Emambakhsh to Iran, where she fears persecution, for being a lesbian, has so far succeeded in getting her deportation delayed.Pegah sought asylum in the UK in 2005, her claim failed despite appeals, and she was arrested in Sheffield on Monday 13th August and is being detained in Yarlswood detention centre. Her case has been taken up by the Iranian Queer Organization, who have said: “If she is going to be returned to Iran, there is much of possibility that she, due to her sexual orientation and her past life in Iran, will be sentenced to death, or, in a most optimistic view, be prosecuted and tortured in some of the ways that are all common among Iran’s religious officials when having made the decision to chastise the so called ‘corrupted’ citizens.”.The global anti-deportation campaign, which has included approaches to the British ambassador in Rome and the Deputy Consul General in San Francisco has resulted in her case getting coverage in the local media, the Iranian media and the gay press around the world.
