Nano Expo at Nottingham Uni
26 May 2007
On 16-17th May a ‘Nano Expo’ took place at the East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham. Nanotechnology is hailed as the new technological fix for the world’s problems by certain scientists, but there are serious issues with the technology itself and the way it is being developed. The Nano Expo site says that the event is: “Designed to bring together key industrialists and researchers in the field of micro- and nanotechnology. Leading international speakers will contribute to parallel sessions targeted at both commercial and scientific audiences.” There are some of us who are less excited about this new technology and think that such conferences should be protested.Links Nano expo website | Institute of Nano Technology | Wikipedia on Nano TechnologyArticles: Nanotech: Corporations make money, government ducks issue, public takes the risk | NANOTECHNOLOGY: What it is and how corporations are using it | Time to make your voice heard on nanotech regulation | Protest at Nano-tech conference, Oxford | Nanoparticle based spray recalled after 80 made ill | After GM Food – here comes Nano Food! | Nano Hazard Competition samples | Nano-Justice and Food Sovereignty | Resistance to Nanotechnology in France | products using Nanotechnology
Indymedia Cambridge Logo Competition
23 May 2007
With Tony’s Decade of Darkness rapidly drawing to a close, the banner at the top of this page will soon become obsolete. And that’s where you come in: we need you to put your creative talents to the test, and make up a new banner for Indymedia Cambridge. It doesn’t matter what form your idea takes. Obviously, the closer to a finished product that we can just bung on the webpage the better, but if you just want to sketch out a doodle on a napkin, that’s fine too. There are few parameters. The size of the banner will have to be roughly the same size as the current one, and have a space somewhere to insert the words INDYMEDIA CAMBRIDGE. It also needs to contain the Indymedia logo (the ‘i’ with the radio waves). And finally, it would make sense to have some visual link to Cambridge. If you really want to show off, you could make sure the banner stretches with the width of the browser window. When we were kicking this around the editorial office, we thought it’d be cool to have a famous Cambridge landmark like the Reality Checkpoint (pictured) or the cycle bridge over the railway line as the ‘i’, and then draw in the radio waves. But that’s just one idea. Maybe you can come up with a better one.Is there a prize for the winning entry, you ask? How about this: a year’s free entry to Indymedia film screenings. Oh, and our eternal gratitude. So get your camera / inkpot / GIMPshop / napkin out and start creating. You can send your ideas and contraptions to Cambridge Indymedia before 20 June or add your logo as a comment to this article. That will give us a week to put up scaffolding and hoist the new banner onto the top of our homepage.
Climate Camp To Target Heathrow
22 May 2007
Last summer, over 600 people converged outside Drax coal-fired power station for 10 days of sustainable living and collective education, culminating in a day of mass action against Drax. This year, the Camp for Climate Action will pitch its tents near Heathrow airport. There will be a day of mass direct action aiming to disrupt the activities of the airport and the aviation industry, but in the interests of public safety there will be no attempt to blockade runways. Although the location is different, the philosophy of the camp remains the same: to be a place for the burgeoning network of people taking radical action on climate change around the country to come together for a week of low-impact living, education, debate, networking, strategising, celebration, and direct action. The camp will feature over 100 workshops covering topics such as climate change impacts, carbon offsetting, biofuels, peak oil, permaculture, practical renewables, campaign strategy, skills for direct action, and much more. Run without leaders by everyone who comes along, it will be a working ecological village using renewable energy, composting waste and sourcing food locally.
Criminal Mass?
22 May 2007
Critical Mass (CM) is a monthly event mainly consisting of cyclists but other forms of human propulsion are welcomed. The first one happened in San Francisco USA on Friday, September 25, 1992 and since then enthusiasts in many towns and cities worldwide have followed suit. Sometimes events calling themselves ‘Critical Mass’ accompany public demonstrations but purists argue they are not related to the regular monthly ride. It is difficult to describe CM as opinions differ widely but they seem to range from a simple celebration of cycling to an anti-authoritarian blockade of traffic, particularly cars, with many facets in between. Almost from the beginning there has been a mixed reaction from the police, ranging from helpful facilitation to aggressive confrontation. In the last few years the police have become much more confrontational in the UK and they try to manipulate the rides. London now has large numbers of cycle police attending every Mass, except the one in December which is close to the New Year holiday when they don’t turn up at all!. The Metropolitan Police issued a leaflet to participants in September 2005 claiming that the ride is not lawful. Their claim was rejected in the High Court in May 2006 but the police have since appealed and won.Critical Massers have vowed that the ride will go on. The next London Critical mass is on Friday 25th May, meeting outside the NFT between 6 and 6.30pm and there has been a call-out to make this the biggest ride ever. From the newswire: Abuse of police powers in Derby | London Critical Mass 30th September 2005 | London Critical Mass under threat | Critical Mass London: Letter from Green Party to Met. All Roads Lead To Palestine
16 May 2007
On the 14th May, 4 activists, based at the ASBO Community Centre in Nottingham got on their bikes and set off for an epic journey to mainland Europe. The project ‘Pedal Powered Clowns to Palestine’ brings together performance, clowning, action and pedal power to raise awareness of the situation in Palestine as well as entertaining and supporting the Palestinian Community through play. In the last few months the group raised money through benefit events in Nottingham to fund their trip. The first leg of the journey will be by train to Hull and then onto the ferry to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Once in Europe a few dates have been planned to work with other groups and visit some social centres. From then on the route will lead North into Germany to the G8 summit in early June. The idea is to join the G8 protests and add a creative element to the planned actions. At the end of June the group will set course for Palestine.Audio: Indepth Interview with the Pedal Powered ClownsPhoto: Pedal Powered Activists from Nottingham set off for Palestine | Mayday Events at the ASBO Centre 1, Nottingham Day Events | Mayday Events at the ASBO Centre 2, Nottingham Night EventsVideo: Short video taken by phone of the departure – video/quicktime 10MOther articles: maydaymayday – have clowns will travel | mayday meltdown | ppc + scroat cinema presents…..Links: Pedal Powered Clowns website | This Week In Palestine (audio) | UK Indymedia Palestine page
Arms Dealers’ Conference Disrupted
16 May 2007
The Shepard Group annual conference on Electronic Warfare was successfully disrupted by activists on Tuesday 15th by a surprise action. The Olympia Conference Centre in central London hosted the event that, under the title of “First in Defence – First to Counter”, arms dealers converged to sell ‘high tech’ weaponry and assorted murder equipment to each other. People who are involved in campaigning against the arms trade were not going to let it go unnoticed.Protesters managed to get onto the roof and drop a banner that said “Smart Bombs- Stupid Wars” whilst other demonstrators in suits managed to infiltrate the conference. After a tour of the place they were able to disrupt events with shouts of “Murderers! War Criminals!” before being thrown out by large men in ill-fitting suits.Meanwhile as this was happening a Samba band turned up as protesters with megaphones and flyers told passers by and staff at the Olympia Conference Centre about the war crimes committed by the delegates present at the conference. A US officer was spotted walking away from the conference and was hounded by demonstrators. The action lasted over two hours, and there were no arrests. London Solidarity Protest Against G8 Repression In Germany
14 May 2007
About 50 people gathered at the Kempinski Hotel in London on Friday 11th May, to show their solidarity with the victims of the G8 raids in Germany last week, and to express their opposition to the upcoming G8 Summit of early June [call]. Kempinski is the hotel group hosting this year’s Summit of the world’s eight most powerful states in Heiligendamm, Germany. The Met had ‘designated’ a pen on the opposite side of the street, but protesters refused to be penned in and stayed by the hotel, without entirely blocking the pavement. Some leaflets were given out whilst, as it has become the norm in London, the FIT kept harrassing protestors by trying to get good shots of their faces.Photos: 1 and 2 | VideoMany more solidarity demonstrations have taken place throughout the world, including one in Edinburgh where the German consulate was also attacked with paint. Next G8 UK mobilisation meeting in London May 17th.

Nuclear Warhead Convoy Secretly Passes Through Chilwell, Nottingham
10 May 2007
It has come to light that in the early hours of Thursday 10th May a convoy carrying nuclear warheads secretly passed through the Stapleford and Chilwell area of Nottingham. The vehicles were spotted driving into the Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell at 6.30am for a rest stop. Heading for the Royal Naval Armament Depot (RNAD) in Coulport, Scotland, the convoy was spotted along the M1 and also the next day as it continued its route along the east coast and along the Edinburgh Bypass. According to a spokesperson for Nukewatch UK, who keep an eye on nuclear convoys around the UK, the route hasn’t been used since the early 90’s. She also mentioned that no convoys have been spotted entering the Chetwynd Barracks and it might be an indication of the convoys starting to use the Chetwynd Barracks for rest stops. The convoy passed through dense populated areas in Stapleford and Chilwell before and after its rest stop at the army base on Chetwynd Road, Chilwell. According to campaigners each lorry weighs approx 44 tonnes and can carry up to 2 ready assembled nuclear warheads, which can contain up to 8 kg of plutonium and uranium each. Each of the modern warheads has the capacity of creating 8 times the impact of that of the bombs used in the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by America in 1945. The convoy was spotted leaving Burfield Atomic Weapons Establishment, 50 miles North of London around 12.30am on Thursday morning. At Burfield AWE the warheads and explosives get assembled into working nuclear weapons. There were people stationed along the route from Stirling to Coulport attempting to resist the convoy. BNP wins seat in Broxtowe
6 May 2007
Sadie Graham, the BNP’s East Midlands Organiser, has taken Brinsley ward in Broxtowe, beating three other candidates. She has claimed a seat on Broxtowe Borough Council, following last week’s local elections. She polled 439 votes in Brinsley, in the west of the borough.Reverend Robert Murray, a local vicar running as a Labour Party candidate, received 295 votes, while independents Kenneth Phillips 109 and Wlady Wilhardt polled 185. In the last borough council elections, the BNP received 43% of the vote, but were beaten by Labour in a two horse race. This victory comes despite anti-fascist activity in the ward, including leafleting and a meeting. Attended by around 40 people, this event took place in February when Graham was the only candidate to have put her hat in the ring.Links: Sadie Graham Shoots Straight | Evening Post coverage
Mayday! Mayday! Celebrations in Nottingham
5 May 2007
Mayday was celebrated properly in Nottingham. On the 1st May the PCS civil service union celebrated by going on strike, picketing and marching, including through Nottingham to a rally in the Congregational Hall. Picket lines sprung up with the sunshine all over Nottingham this May Day. Besides the main civil service workplaces (Revenue and Customs, Department of Work and Pensions, Driving Standards Agency) all sorts of office blocks in the City, housing a civil service work unit, sprouted a PCS picket in the door way: many experienced pickets; many first time pickets. Read full report. On 5th May another Mayday march decended upon the city. Marchers rallied in the Brewhouse Yard, just around the corner from Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, departing just before one. The march was led by a samba band followed by the No Borders, No Nations, No Deportations banner. A good few hundred people made their way up Castle Boulevard, onto Maid Marian Way and then down Friar Lane. After having been at the Market Square and once back in at the rallying point, marchers were addressed by speakers talking about Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the occupation of Iraq, the rise of the BNP, the PCS strike last week and ID cards. There was also music by bands from Zimbabwe, Kurdistan and even Birmingham. Mayday 2007 in the West Mids
3 May 2007
Well, it was almost pathetic compared to other places such as Turkey, Germany or Switzerland, for example. But at least some things happened on May 1st to celebrate the International Workers Day and the social and economic struggles of the working class and labour movement.Striking civil servants held a few pickets throughout Birmingham in the morning, then a rally in Chamberlain Square, organised by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), in defence of jobs, services, pay and work conditions. [report]Later in day, the University and College Union (UCU) did a stall in Birmingham city centre to protest against government plans to cut free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for asylum seekers and refugees, while members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) joined in protest at plans to close local blood processing and testing sites around the country and merge them into three “supercentres” in Bristol, Manchester and Colindale. [report]In the evening, workers and activists from across the Midlands headed to Wolverhampton for the 13th Wolverhampton Annual May Day Festival, organised by Wolverhampton May Day Committee. The event was supported by the West Midlands Fire Brigades Union, West Midlands UNISON and Midlands TUC. The theme was “Keep Wolverhampton a fascist-free zone”. Local Elections Round Up
2 May 2007
Labour takes climate change seriously by campaigning in an SUV in the Berridge Ward.‘A small tale that sheds some light on the ways of politicians….when the campaigners were challenged on their ostentatious fuel-guzzling monster, they at first tried to laugh it off, then claimed “er, it’s LPG!”; this was clearly untrue, it was diesel, and when asked to demonstrate this (EG. by showing us the fuel nozzle, they refused, made their excuses and left. This from the same party that claims to be taking climate change seriously in Nottingham!’Anti-Fascist activists hit Hucknall with leaflets to stop the BNP gaining a foothalt.‘The BNP have published their list of candidates for the Council Elections on 3 May. Including Parish councillors they are fielding a record 827 candidates across the country. The good news is that Nottingham city remains an area where there are no candidates standing. The closest places to Nottingham they are standing are Hucknall, Brinsley, Eastwood, Heanor and Ilkeston. The biggest dangers at the moment are Hucknall where last year the BNP pulled about 25% of the vote, and Heanor, where they lost by only 16 votes last time.’Local activists call to ‘Vote for Nobody’‘It’s not just about making a mockery of the farce that is “representative” democracy. It’s also about producing more spoiled ballot papers with “Nobody” scrawled across them than the official winning candidate, thus undermining their “legitimacy” (as if they ever had any) to push the same old business-friendly, community-trashing policies that they always do, regardless of who gets in.’On the newswire: Berridge Labour SUV nonsense! | LAST PUSH TO STOP THE BNP! | Vote Nobody on May 3rd! | Stop The BNP by May 3rd | £7.2m to vote Labour?Previous feature article: Don’t vote! Don’t Vote! It only encourages them
29 Apr 2007
So it’s that time of the year again: the election circus has come to town and you are expected to turn out to vote on May 3rd. By this seemingly straightforward act, however, you will tacitly endorse a sham democracy and are unlikely to change anything really important. Democracy is supposed to be “rule by the People”, but there are huge areas in the UK system of government, such as foreign policy and defence, where the People have absolutely no say. Even health and education, which are typically hot topics in election times, are being sold off, always at the expense of the poor.Further, Brummagem Star, a newly launched grassroots newsletter, has exposeed that BNP candidates in Birmingham have been using bogus nominees to make up the ten required to be able to stand for a ward. Back in 2004, when 6 Labour councillors were found guilty of rigging the electoral system, a High Court judge said Birmingham’s electoral fraud would “disgrace a Banana Republic”.Those who abstain from voting are often labelled as apathetic and may not bring about a proper democracy in the immediate future, but at least they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are not helping perpetuate a downright lie. On the other hand, there have been many successful examples in recent years of communities self-organising through solidarity and mutual aid. Direct democracy does not need the interference of parasitic intermediaries who only show up during election campaigns or for a ‘photo opportunity’.
Mayday, Mayday! Take Control, Make Up Your Mind
29 Apr 2007
May 1st swings around again with a diverse bunch of activities to check out; from Maypole picnic parties, to migrant rights benefits, to shirking the 9-5 by dancin’ in the streets!.Mayday is also known as International Workers’ Day, which will see this years annual workers march leaving Clerkenwell Green at 1pm to Trafalgar Square, along with the more radical Autonomous Workers Bloc. For London Indymedia, it is a Birthday, 8 years of reporting, growing and evolving. London Indymedia is a successful alternative to the corporate mainstream ‘press’ due to volunteers who post, maintain, code, write, support, promote, video, photograph -If the Indymedia project is to survive another 8 years, we need to continue share and disseminate the message that another media – our media – is possible.London Mayday07 Links: Space Hijackers – Suited & Booted | Autonomous Workers Bloc | Camberwell Squatted Social Centre – Maypole Picnic | Union March and RallyRest of UK and World Mayday: The Agitator Blog – compilation of Global Mayday 2007 events | Nottingham May 5th | Glasgow | Edinburgh | Euro Mayday Portal | USA Immigrant Solidarity Network
Euromayday 2007
28 Apr 2007
Like in previous years, precari@s in Europe and beyond have chosen the first of May to take the streets. On Mayday, casual and flexible workers, immigrants, unemployed, temp-workers, part-timers, are stepping out of invisibility: L@s precari@s se rebelan! (The precarious are rebelling). They are demanding new social rights, or, as in the South of Spain, “the right to have rights” in the first place. In some cities, the precari@s march with the trade unions. In others, they set up their own Maydays. Who are “the precarious?” Here is a description from Barcelona EuroMayday Manifesto 2004:“We are the precarious, the flexible, the temporary, the mobile. We’re the people that live on a tightrope, in a precarious balance, we’re the restructured and outsourced, those who lack a stable job, and those who are overexploited; those who pay a mortgage or a rent that strangles us. We’re forced to buy and sell our ability to love and care. Unless you make money off other people’s hard work, 1st May each year is YOUR day! Yes, it is a day to celebrate YOU, and all YOUR struggles against the profit system! It also helps us remember our predecessors, many of whom died so that we could live better lives.
